An elegant and decorative terra cotta group, finely sculpted, depicting Psyche revived by Cupid's kiss or Love, an ancient artistic theme from Greek mythology.

 

A fine 19th-century French work in the style of Claude-Augustin Cayot's Cupid and Psyche in the Wallace Collection.

 

Sizes: Height 22.04 In. - Width 21.25 In.

 

In good condition, with some minor patina wear that adds to its charm. Our terracotta rests on a carved and gilded wooden base decorated with a frieze of pearls (some wear to the gilding).

 

Claude-Augustin Cayot, born in Paris in 1677 and died in Paris on April 6, 1722, was a French sculptor.

He studied painting with Jean Jouvenet and sculpture with Etienne le Hongre. He worked for 14 years in Van Cleve's studio.

 

Il est reçu en 1711 à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts grâce à sa sculpture La Mort de Didon encore très marquée par l’esthétique classique.
