Around 1905 the architects Charlet and Perrin commissioned a set of 13 oil paintings for the decor of the Bar Romain 6 rue Caumartin.

Until 2011, these 13 paintings adorned the Bar Romain, during which year the paintings were replaced by copies.

Biography:

A student of Jean-Paul Laurens at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Gustave Paul Alexandre Surand practiced painting, pastel and sculpture. 

He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1881 and received an honorable mention in 1884. He lived at 116, rue de Vaugirard in Paris.

He painted large fauvist paintings after studies on nature. "He was a painter of genre scenes in which he showed himself sensitive to variations in atmosphere and contrasts in light. He knows how to suggest with a powerful line the moment when the animal is ready to pounce. 

In 1884, he obtained a travel grant that allowed him to visit Tunisia.

The Parisian restaurant the Bar Romain, at 6, rue de Caumartin, now Le Petit Olympia, kept thirteen paintings, including Fête de vendange given by Messaline in the palace of Claudius, in honor of her lover Silius (1905), Nero in front of the burning of Rome, The Arenas under Caligula, which were auctioned at the Hotel Drouot in 2011, then in 2023.

On February 28, 1973 took place the sale of his studio at the Hotel Drouot in Paris.

Distinctions:

Grand Prix de Rome in 1905.

Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor by decree of December 31, 1909.
