A fisherman spends a pleasant day fishing in his boat in the middle of a peaceful, luminous landscape, with a unique view of the Tour Carbonnière in Aigues-Mortes.
A very fine mid-19th-century oil on canvas by the excellent painter Ponthus-Cinier. Signed lower left, it is beautifully framed in carved wood and gilded stucco.
Dimension sans cadre : Hauteur 24 cm – Longueur 35 cm.
Dimensions avec cadre : Hauteur 42 cm – Longueur 52 cm.
On canvas and in its original frame, numbered 1594, inventory number of a Salon (Paris or Lyon), in very good condition.
Biography:
Claude Antoine Ponthus-Cinier (1812 – 1885).
French landscape painter.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Paul Delaroche.
He spent two years in Italy, Florence, Rome and Naples.
In 1841, he won the second Grand Prix de Rome.
On his return to France, he embarked on a long tour of the Dauphiné, the Dombes, Provence, the Alps, Savoy and the Pyrenees.
Son art évolua vers une conception du paysage à l’Italienne, rigoureuse et savante, avec recherche de l’effet décoratif et de l’arrangement pittoresque.
He exhibited at the Lyon Salon between 1837 and 1885, and became very well known in the capital of Gaul, where he received numerous commissions.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1841.
