A fisherman spends a pleasant day fishing in his boat in the middle of a peaceful, luminous landscape, with a unique view of the Tour Carbonnière in Aigues-Mortes.
A very fine mid-19th-century oil on canvas by the excellent painter Ponthus-Cinier. Signed lower left, it is beautifully framed in carved wood and gilded stucco.

Biography:
Claude Antoine Ponthus-Cinier (1812 - 1885).
French landscape painter.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Paul Delaroche.
He spent two years in Italy, Florence, Rome and Naples.
In 1841, he won the second Grand Prix de Rome.
On his return to France, he embarked on a long tour of the Dauphiné, the Dombes, Provence, the Alps, Savoy and the Pyrenees.
His art evolved towards a rigorous, scholarly, Italian-style conception of landscape, with an emphasis on decorative effect and picturesque arrangement.
He exhibited at the Lyon Salon between 1837 and 1885, and became very well known in the capital of Gaul, where he received numerous commissions.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1841.

Tour Carbonnière in Aigues-Mortes: Built at the end of the 13th century on the historic site of Saint-Laurent d'Aigouze. The Tour Carbonnière is a watchtower built to protect the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department of France's Occitanie region.
