The Dutch term for this shape of exotic vases resembling seventeenth-century Persian flasks is Knobbelvaas or Knobby vase. This type of jar was produced by several potteries in a variety of sizes and painted in either blue and white or polychrome.

Imported Chinese and Japanese porcelain was greatly sought after in the Netherlands and strongly influenced the decoration of ceramics by Delft potteries.

When the civil war in China from 1644 to 1647 brought imports to a halt, the Dutch East India Company began to transport wares from Japan to fill the demand. Inspired by imports, J F Van Kessel in Delft made these pair of Gourd-Shaped earthenware Vases decorated in the Imari style of Chinese porcelain.
