An emblematic view of the Venice Grand Canal entrance, with the Punta della Dogana, the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute in the background, sumptuous Venetian Palazzi on either side, the painting embellished with numerous boats and gondolas filled with animated characters.

Biography:

 

Jane or John Vivian (active from 1869, exhibited 1881-88). Vivian was a London based artist who also later lived in Birmingham. He spent part of her career painting in and around Venice in the 1880's and is best known for her oil paintings of the city and its canals and architecture.
